About the Project

We provide easy access to the Louisiana Creole language and make available tools which cultivate and promote the oral and written use of Kréyòl Louisianais.

Beginnings

Like so many Creole people, our founder had always wanted to learn the Louisiana Creole language but never had the resources. After years of searching, he finally found a place to purchase a Louisiana Creole dictionary — but it was available only in paper or PDF format. Given his technical background, he wanted to search for an English word and automatically receive the Louisiana Creole translation, and even hear the pronunciation. That didn't exist, and no structured resources filled the gap, so he set out to build the first online Louisiana Creole Dictionary.

And now…

From June through mid-November 2014, teams of volunteers meticulously entered data into the online resource, with careful attention to modern Louisiana Creole orthography across thousands of examples and sample sentences. The resource continues to grow as users around the world suggest new words. Together we hope to spread the Louisiana Creole language in a way that is useful, accessible, and accurate.
