Overview

LouisianaCreoleDictionary.com (“we,” “our,” the “site”) is a free educational resource for the Louisiana Creole language. This page explains what data we collect, why, and what choices you have.

We do not sell personal data, and we do not require an account to read the dictionary, use the search, or view lessons.

Information we collect

  • Search queries and page views. When you search the dictionary or browse entries, the query string and page URL are sent to our server as part of the normal HTTP request.
  • Submissions. If you submit a word through the /submit form, we store the word, suggested translation, and any notes you provide. If you include your name or email, we store those too. Do not include information you are not comfortable sharing.
  • Server logs. Our hosting provider records standard request logs (IP address, user agent, timestamp, URL). These are kept short-term for security and diagnostics.
  • Admin audit log. If you are an authorized editor and sign in, your actions and IP address are recorded in an internal audit log. Public visitors are not included in this log.

Cookies and local storage

We use a small number of cookies:

  • View preference (lcd_view) — remembers whether you chose the desktop or mobile layout. Expires after 30 days.
  • Admin session — only set if you log in as an editor. Marked HttpOnly, Secure, and SameSite=Lax.
  • Analytics and advertising cookies — set by third parties (see below).

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand which pages people find useful. Google Analytics sets cookies that record anonymous interaction data (pages visited, time on page, rough location by IP). We do not share any personally identifying information with Google.

You can opt out of Google Analytics entirely by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

This site displays ads served by Google AdSense and its partners to help support ongoing work on the dictionary.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and other websites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • You may opt out of personalized advertising at Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies at aboutads.info/choices.
  • For more information on how Google uses data from partner sites, see How Google uses information from sites that use its services.

We do not serve personalized ads to visitors we identify as minors, and we do not allow advertising on pages intended for children.

Children's privacy

This site is intended for a general audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have, please contact us and we will remove it.

How data is stored

Dictionary entries, submissions, and the admin audit log are stored in an SQLite database on our hosting provider's servers. We do not transmit this data to third parties except as described above (analytics, advertising).

Submissions may be published on the site after editorial review. If you included your name, it may appear as a contributor attribution; if you did not, your submission will be attributed anonymously.

Your choices

  • Block or delete cookies in your browser settings.
  • Use the Google Analytics and Google Ads opt-out links above.
  • Request removal of a submission you made by contacting us at /contact.

Changes to this policy

If we change how the site handles data, we will update this page and the “Last updated” date above.
